Need help with military divorce and child support... where do I start?

Hey everyone, I’m a military spouse, and my husband left us with no financial support and is having an affair. He’s headed to Italy for two years, and I’m looking to get a legal separation and divorce. We have three kids, and I don’t even know where to start. Can anyone help?

First off, I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this. Since he’s in the Army, they actually require him to support you financially. You might want to contact his command if he’s not providing support.

Yeah, exactly. The military takes it seriously if a service member isn’t providing for their family. Army’s CID might even be an option.

@Parker
What’s CID?

CID is the Army Criminal Investigation Division. They handle stuff like this, including cases where there’s no support being given. It’s actually a violation of their code.

If you’re near a base, the JAG office could offer free legal advice. They help with divorce and child support cases, especially if it’s military-related.

I haven’t been to JAG yet. Can they really help with the whole process?

@Oli
Yes, they can at least help you file or point you in the right direction for next steps.

If he’s PCSing, he’s still required to support you financially. That’s actually in the military code, so don’t hesitate to bring it up.

What does PCSing mean?

Oh sorry! PCS means Permanent Change of Station, like a long-term move. Even when they move, they’re required to support their family.

Also, there’s a legal aid service in Alabama if you’re in the state. They might be able to help you get a lawyer faster.

Thank you! I’ll look into that. I feel like I’m drowning here.

You can also find a lot of divorce resources online. There’s a guide for Alabama divorces with step-by-step instructions if you’re in a pinch.
