I’m currently on hold with them (for what feels like forever) trying to cancel—again—because, despite canceling back in May of last year, they’ve been charging my bank account every month since then without my noticing!
They were useless in helping me with my issue. I was being discriminated against in school by a teacher, and when I finally got to speak with my “personal lawyer,” his response was, “Well, what do you want ME to do?!” Ummm… You’re a lawyer! I’m being discriminated against! How can you not connect the dots?
The cancellation process was a nightmare. I was on hold for 30 minutes before getting any help. There’s a ridiculous process where your request to cancel only places your membership on “hold” for 30 days, and then it reactivates unless you follow very specific instructions in a follow-up email. With my busy life and ADHD, I wasn’t able to follow through properly, so here I am—stuck.
Good luck dealing with this company, everyone. After my experience with that wholly incompetent lawyer, the unhelpful customer service, and the hoops you have to jump through just to leave the membership, I’d rather take my chances and hire a “real” lawyer if I ever need one. These people were absolutely useless to me.
I tried LegalShield in Colorado, and the law firm they use in this state is completely incompetent and honestly laughable. I canceled within the first month, so I’ll be keeping an eye out for any extra charges.
LegalShield is what it is—what do you really expect for $30 a month? Top-of-the-line legal advice? Maybe the lawyer was genuinely asking what you wanted him to do because you can’t just vent to a lawyer and expect them to craft a whole plan of attack unless you’re paying a significant fee for that.
Canceling isn’t that difficult. I’ve done it twice. Yes, it requires a bit of effort—you can’t just request a cancellation and expect them to press a button. You need to send an email, a written request for cancellation. If you couldn’t manage that, I’m not sure how you planned on suing a school for discrimination.
Did you even have a clear idea of what you wanted to accomplish? Were you looking to sue for a policy change, press charges, or seek monetary compensation?
It’s not a scam. I’ve canceled twice and reinstated my membership three times because they’ve been more helpful to me than most other lawyers I’ve spoken with. If you don’t understand how to use the service and its capabilities, sure, it might feel like a scam. But thinking you’d get a lawyer to handle your entire case and maybe even represent you for pennies is just unrealistic.
However, if you have an ongoing legal issue and are self-represented, LegalShield can be amazing. You can call with quick questions and usually get someone on the phone within a day. They’re direct, pay attention, tell you what forms to use, what’s possible, and will even review the forms you type up to help catch any errors. With most lawyers, even without full representation, an appointment to review documents can cost around $150 per hour—and that’s on the low-income price tier.
Just use your brain, understand how the service works and its limitations, and you can get some real value out of it.
