I’ve got some questions about child support, especially when it comes to adult kids or college situations. Can parents stop paying if their kids aren’t doing well in school? Also, is it possible for an ex to get support out of a settlement payment? And what about if a parent is just choosing not to work? Anyone dealt with these situations or got some insight?
In Missouri, I think if the kid fails in college, parents can stop support. Heard they have to show grades each term?

Yup, that’s true. In Missouri, kids need to send grades to both parents each term. If they’re failing half or more, support can stop.

Interesting… so no grades, no support? Didn’t know it was that strict .
@Mackenzie
Exactly! And if they don’t send those grades, parents could technically stop paying without any issues.
Anyone know if you can get child support from a settlement payment? Like, can a lien be put on it?

Yes, you can! They can put a lien on the settlement if there’s already a child support order in place.

I’ve heard it’s quicker if you go straight through an attorney to file it directly rather than waiting on the state.
Is the new wife ever responsible for child support? Like, if the guy remarries?

Nope! Child support is just about the parents’ income. Unless assets are joint, the new spouse isn’t on the hook.

Exactly. They’d only check joint assets if the mom believes they’re hiding funds.

Got it. So remarriage doesn’t make her liable at all?
What if the mom isn’t working at all? Can the dad stop paying then?

Nope, the dad’s income is still used for support. Doesn’t matter if the mom’s working or not.

Dad could argue she’s unfit if he thinks she’s not providing for the kid, but it doesn’t stop his support.
Anyone in Indiana? I heard something about a time limit on claiming child support after kids turn 19?

In Indiana, they usually stop at age 19 unless there’s an order for more education support before then.

I think there’s also a 20-year limit on starting a new case after they turn 19.
