So I got an 80/60 speeding ticket in Appomattox, VA (code 47.2-86.2). I haven’t had any tickets in years, and I’m trying to figure out the best way to handle this. The hearing is on Dec 4th. Any advice on how to reduce the impact—like avoiding points or minimizing the penalties? Also, does anyone know if it’s worth questioning the officer in court or doing a driver safety course?
I’ve been there before, lol. Definitely check out a driver safety course—it can remove up to 5 points in VA.

Oh cool, I haven’t done one before. Can I just sign up for any course online?
@Skyler
It has to be state-approved, but yeah, there are plenty online. Just make sure it’s legit.
You should ask the officer when the radar was last calibrated. If it wasn’t done recently, that could help your case.

That’s interesting. How recent does it have to be calibrated for it to matter?
@Skyler
Usually within the last 2-4 weeks. If it’s not, the ticket might get dismissed.
You could also ask if the officer was moving when they clocked your speed. That can mess with the reading.

Oh, I didn’t think of that. Does that argument work often?

It depends, but if they can’t prove proper training or calibration, you might have a shot.
Tbh, I’d get a lawyer if you’re really worried. They can handle the tough questions for you.

Good point. Do you think it’s worth it if this is my only ticket in years?
@Skyler
If you’re aiming to avoid points entirely, it might be worth it. Lawyers know the system better than we do lol.
Make sure you attend the hearing. If the officer doesn’t show up, the ticket could be dismissed automatically.

Wait, really? I didn’t know that. Do they often not show up?
@Skyler
It happens sometimes, especially if they’re busy. No guarantees, though!
