Spousal Support in Military Divorce... what are my options?

My husband is active duty military and has filed for divorce. I’ve been served and we’ve talked about spousal support because I haven’t been working for the last couple of months. I originally agreed to $1,700 a month, but after doing some research, I realized I might be able to get more. Anyone been through something similar?

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. It’s tough dealing with this while also trying to figure out your finances. Sounds like you’re doing the right thing by researching. Have you had any luck talking to an attorney about getting more support?

That sounds like a tough spot. If you can’t afford a lawyer, maybe try looking into free legal services? I’ve heard some courts can make the other spouse pay for your attorney if you can’t afford one.

Sorry to hear you’re dealing with this. It’s rough. Maybe start by seeing if you can get a local attorney to give you a free consultation? They can usually point you in the right direction for things like spousal support.

If you’re struggling to pay for an attorney, try checking with local legal aid organizations or military-specific legal resources. Sometimes they have programs that can help pay for your lawyer.

I’ve been there before. If your husband isn’t cooperative, and you can’t afford an attorney, ask about having the court order him to pay for your legal fees. It’s possible, especially if you’re in a tight spot.
