Hey everyone, need some advice here. My daughter’s teacher has been having her work through all recesses, lunches, and breaks to catch up on her schoolwork since she’s a bit behind. I don’t think it’s fair for her to miss out on breaks like this. Are there any rules or guidelines about this in schools? We’re in Jackson County, Oregon if that makes a difference. Thanks for any insights!
That doesn’t sound right to me either. Kids need their breaks to reset! Maybe try talking to the principal? They might have more say on how things are handled.

Good point. I did talk to the teacher, but I might bring it up with the principal too. Just want her to have some downtime like everyone else.

Yeah, you’re right to ask. My kid’s school makes sure they get breaks, no matter what. Hope the principal is on board with you.
Does your daughter have any support or accommodations in place? Sometimes schools can make adjustments if a kid needs a bit of extra help.

Nothing like that right now, but maybe it’s something to look into. She’s always been a bit slower-paced, so maybe she’d qualify for some extra support.

If she needs more time, they could consider an IEP or 504 plan. It’s worth asking!

I’d suggest writing a letter to the school district too. Sometimes putting it in writing gets more attention.
Thanks for the tip! I didn’t think about a formal letter. Might be worth a try.
Wait, she can’t take the work home? That seems weird. Maybe you could push back on that rule too.

Yeah, the teacher said they don’t allow it to be done at home. I don’t really understand why, but it’s frustrating!

Maybe they’re worried about fairness if other kids don’t have the same chance. But still, she should get her breaks!
If you’re looking for legal advice, sometimes states have rules about this. Might be worth checking out any local education policies.

Thanks, I’ll dig into that. Just want to make sure we’re doing what’s best for her.
