They refused to hire me... is it legal what they did?

Hi everyone, so I live in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and recently applied for a job with FedEx. The first thing they asked was to run a background check. After that, they sent me for a drug screen and DOT physical. I passed my drug screen and physical last week. Today, I reached out for an update, and the lady responded, ‘your background check came back bad.’ I’m really confused about why they would send me for the drug screen and physical if my background check was already bad. Is this even legal?

Some companies might waste money on screenings hoping for the best. They might just be trying to get employees on board quickly if the background check looks okay.

That’s frustrating. They seemed to have everything back before sending me for the tests.

Yeah, it usually takes a week or two for background checks. Did they confirm you passed before sending you for the drug screen?

Sounds like someone might have messed up. I’d call them back to clarify everything.

In Oklahoma, there’s no ‘ban the box’ law for private companies, so they can legally decide not to hire you based on your background check.

That makes sense. But I still don’t understand why they’d send me for tests after getting the results.

What state you’re in matters. Oklahoma’s laws apply to you, not Delaware’s.

Got it, thanks for clarifying that! I appreciate it.

Definitely keep all your communication documented. If you think they mishandled your application, it could help if you decide to take action later.

I’ve saved everything so far. Just hope it helps if I need to push back.
