I’m on SSDI right now but it’s just not enough for me to rent my own place or live independently. I used to have SSI too, but they took it away when they found out I wasn’t paying rent to my parents. I wanna get back on SSI so I can rent an apartment or maybe a condo. Has anyone been through this? What do I even do?
Yeah that’s rough… I think not paying rent to your parents can mess with how SSI sees your living situation. They count it as ‘in-kind support’ or something?

Yeah exactly, it’s called ISM. It’s basically when they think you’re getting free stuff like food or shelter so they reduce your benefits.
@Rin
wait what’s ISM?
ISM = in-kind support and maintenance. If someone’s helping you with rent, food, or utilities, SSI might cut or stop benefits.
If you’re trying to get SSI back, you might need to show you’re paying fair market rent now. Like have an actual lease or rental agreement.

Makes sense. I guess I’d have to start renting a place first before reapplying?
@Briar
Yeah or even a room somewhere with a lease. Something official. SSI just wants proof you’re not getting free housing.
I think talking to a disability lawyer might help. They can explain what paperwork you need to requalify.

Fr fr. I had a friend who got help from one and it made the whole thing way easier.

Some do it on contingency or first consult free. Worth asking around.
Lowkey wild that they just take your SSI away like that. Like bro… how am I supposed to pay rent with just SSDI?

Right?? SSDI isn’t enough for solo living in most places unless rent is crazy low.
Maybe try applying again and this time have a rental setup ready. Even if it’s just subletting or a shared space. SSI might look at it differently.

Subletting could actually work… hadn’t thought of that.
