What charges could someone face for illegally obtaining a DD214?

I recently found out that someone illegally got a copy of my DD214 and then claimed I was dishonorably discharged on social media, which is totally false. I was honorably discharged. I thought only I or my immediate family could get access to my DD214. What kind of charges could they face for doing this? Also, is there a way to find out who requested my DD214?

Whoa, that sounds intense. If they forged your signature or used fake ID to get it, isn’t that considered fraud?

Yeah, I was thinking the same. Wouldn’t they have to forge my signature to get it?

Pretty sure it’s fraud. You could also check if their lawyer friend did something shady to help them get it.

Wait, what’s a DD214? I’m not familiar with that term.

Oh, sorry! It’s a document that lists your military discharge status. Kind of like a military record.

Thanks for explaining! Makes sense why it’d be a big deal if someone messed with it.

You can do a records request with your branch of the military to see who requested your DD214. They keep a log of all inquiries.

That’s super helpful! I didn’t know they tracked inquiries. I’ll definitely look into that.

Posting false stuff like that on social media could count as defamation. Have you thought about suing them?

Yeah, I’ve been considering it. Just need to gather some proof first.

Even family needs approval to get your DD214 unless it’s a spouse or child. Sounds like fraud if they didn’t have permission.

Exactly. It’s crazy how they even managed to pull this off.
