About a year ago, I was convicted of retail theft and now have a misdemeanor on my record. It is my first offense, and I don’t plan on getting into any more trouble. I live in Illinois and my court date is coming soon, but I have not finished my community service hours. I planned to do it over the summer, but the pandemic made it hard to find volunteer work. I need about 30 hours and have only completed 12 so far. With just 31 days until my court date, I am not sure I will finish in time. I wonder what will happen if I tell the judge I haven’t completed the hours. Should I bring my attorney, or can I explain this on my own?
I would advise that you consult with your attorney as soon as possible. Your attorney can provide specific legal advice based on Illinois law and your individual circumstances.
If you haven’t completed your community service hours, honesty and transparency are important when addressing the judge
If you did not complete your hours by the deadline, the court may find you in violation; but, if you have completed your hours by the time you see the judge, he or she will most likely not violate you. You should contact the attorney who represented you, or a different attorney if you want. They might be able to help you.
You are old enough to know that not finishing a court ordered community service has consequences. Normally community service is given as a punishment instead of incarceration. You were given a chance. You may still avid going to youth detention if you go back to doing your community service organisers and apologise for your lapse. Good luck.
