So I’ve been hearing about Adjournment in Contemplation of Dismissal (ACD) recently, and I was wondering what it really means. From what I gather, ACD is when the judge decides to postpone a case for a few months, like 6 to 12 months, and if the defendant stays out of trouble, the charges might just be dropped. It sounds like it’s not really probation, but could still be a chance to avoid conviction. Anyone know more about this?
Yeah, that’s pretty much it! It gives someone a chance to prove they can stay out of trouble and, if they do, the charges could be dropped. It’s not a conviction, so it’s kinda like a second chance.
I’ve heard ACD can show up on background checks. Does that mean it could affect job opportunities?
What happens if someone gets a citation for trespassing and shoplifting? Do they get an ACD too?
If someone has two violations, like marijuana possession and a driving infraction, how is that handled?
Can someone with an ACD in a criminal case still deal with a family case? Like, are the two related?
