I’m in the middle of an HR investigation here in Illinois and need to understand my rights. They told me some details, but I’m still unsure of what all I can do. Any guidance?
You’ve got the right to know the general issue they’re investigating. HR should at least give you an idea of what’s going on.

Wait, really? They didn’t tell me much, just that there’s an ‘investigation’. Should I ask for more info?

Yeah, I think it’s worth asking. They should give you enough so you can respond properly.
Make sure to document everything! Every conversation with HR, any emails… it’s good to keep a record just in case.
You’re also protected from retaliation. They can’t demote or fire you just because you’re under investigation.

That’s a relief to hear! So if I feel there’s unfair treatment, what should I do?

Just keep all records and report it if needed. HR or an external agency can help if it seems like retaliation.
If it makes you more comfortable, you can ask to bring someone to any meetings, like a coworker or union rep if you’re unionized.

Does HR actually have to let you bring someone along?

It depends on company policy, but it’s always worth asking. Sometimes it helps just to have someone with you.
FYI, Illinois law lets you present your side and any supporting info you’ve got. Make sure to bring any evidence you think will help.

Thanks for the advice! I’ll be sure to bring what I can to back up my side.
