What should I do after a vehicle accident involving a pedestrian?

So, I had an accident with my pickup truck where I hit a pedestrian. This happened a few days ago, and unfortunately, the woman passed away. I wasn’t given a ticket or charged with anything at the time, but now I’m wondering… can they still come back later and charge me? Also, what steps should I take legally to handle this? I’d appreciate any advice from someone who’s dealt with this kind of thing before.

Wow, I’m really sorry you’re going through this. I think the police can file charges later if they gather evidence. Did they give you any kind of report or paperwork?

Thanks… No, they didn’t give me anything at the time. Should I contact them, or is that a bad idea?

Yeah, contacting them might not hurt, but maybe get a lawyer first just to be safe.

I think they can still charge you, but it depends on your state. Where are you located?

I’m in Iowa. Not sure how long they have to press charges here.

In Iowa, they might have a statute of limitations, but for something like this, they could act pretty fast if they want.

You should definitely notify your insurance and let them know about the situation if you haven’t already.

Good point. I did call them, but they said they’d wait for any updates from law enforcement. Does that sound normal?

Yeah, insurance companies usually wait for the police report. Did they say if they’d cover you if charges are filed?

If the woman passed away, there might be additional legal concerns. Are you working with a lawyer yet?

Not yet… do you think I should get one even if I haven’t been charged?

Definitely. It’s better to have legal advice early on, especially in serious cases like this.

This is so tough. If you’re unsure about charges, maybe check with your local DMV or police for updates.

Thanks, I’ll consider that. I just don’t want to make things worse by asking too many questions.

Understandable. That’s why a lawyer is key—they can handle that stuff without putting you at risk.
