What should I do after getting my 2nd speeding ticket?

Hey guys, I got my second speeding ticket, one in April and another in May, and now I’m kinda freaking out about what comes next. The first ticket was cleared after I wrote a traffic exam, but now I have a court date coming up for the second one. I’m worried that the old ticket might show up again if I pay for the new one. Has anyone been in a similar situation? Should I contest it, or just pay and hope for the best? I really don’t want to get three tickets on my record :grimacing:.

I had something similar happen a while ago. From what I know, if the first ticket was dismissed, it shouldn’t show back up, even if you get another one later. But it’s always better to double-check with a lawyer! Just to be safe.

Yeah, that’s what I heard too. But you should definitely get a lawyer involved if you wanna contest it. They can help you figure out the best move.

For sure, lawyers can be a big help in situations like this. I would also recommend checking out Justia or Martindale for a local attorney!

I think if you contest it, there’s a chance it could be dismissed. Just make sure you have all the details and maybe get a traffic lawyer to help. I wouldn’t worry too much about the first ticket coming back, though.

I’m in Oregon too and was told that if you get another ticket within 18 months, it might bring back the old one. Not sure how true that is, though.

Oh, good to know! I guess that could happen, but it’s still worth talking to a lawyer to get more clarity on your specific situation.

So here’s the deal. You can definitely try to get it dismissed, but it’s probably better to consult a traffic lawyer first. They’ll know if there’s a chance for dismissal or if paying the ticket is your best option. Hope that helps!

I’m a little confused about the process. If I pay the ticket, does it automatically mean I’m guilty? Or can I still contest it later?

Yeah, if you pay, it usually means you’re admitting guilt. But you can still try to contest it before you pay if you think there’s a mistake or reason to challenge it.

I wouldn’t stress too much about the old ticket coming back. As long as it was dismissed properly, it shouldn’t pop back up. But definitely get a lawyer if you’re unsure. They can help you figure out the best course of action.

@Chen
Thanks for the reassurance! I think I’ll just pay the ticket and hope everything stays clean on my record.

One thing to keep in mind is that you can usually postpone the court date if you need more time. Your lawyer might help you with that, so you don’t feel rushed. Also, look into online payment options if you can’t make it in person.

@Marston
Good to know! I was worried I wouldn’t have enough time to figure things out. Sounds like I should be able to handle it online though.
