What's the deal with inmate tablets? And can I send photos of his mail?

Does anyone know the cost of those tablets inmates can use? And what happens to it once they’re released? Also, can I send photos of his mail that’s been piling up at home, like health insurance and food stamp notices? These are important and might expire soon…

Good question! Usually, the inmate or their family pays for certain services on those tablets, like messaging or video calls. But they don’t own them, I think they gotta give them back when they’re released. Might be worth double-checking though.

Ah, okay! Makes sense they wouldn’t keep them… probably wouldn’t get much use on the outside anyway lol. Thanks .

@Foster
Yeah, tablets are more like rentals from what I know. It can be pricy for the family, though! Have you checked with the jail about options?

As for sending mail photos, I’ve heard it’s okay to send things like insurance letters as long as they’re necessary. Just double-check what’s allowed .

Perfect, thanks! I wasn’t sure if it’s okay to send those kinds of docs, but seems like it’s no problem.

Is it possible the jail can help him rebook missed appointments if he’s still on things like food stamps?

Depends on the place, but sometimes they have social workers or people who can help reconnect benefits. Might just take a few calls to find out.

Good idea! I’ll look into it. Would be super helpful if someone could help him handle that from the inside.

If you’re covering the cost of the tablet for him, make sure you’re only paying for what he actually needs on it. Some programs have all sorts of add-ons.

Good tip! Some of those add-ons seem unnecessary unless he’s using it a lot. Might be worth asking him what features he really needs.

Didn’t know about the add-ons, thanks! I’ll ask if he’s actually using all that stuff or if it’s just basic communication he needs.

Wondering if there’s a cheaper alternative for keeping in touch, like phone calls? Might save a bit over time.

Yeah, maybe! I’ll check out the costs and see if calls are easier for both of us.

True, some families just go with calls if they’re more affordable. Tablets are only worth it if you’re messaging a lot, I guess.
