Will a speeding ticket change to reckless driving if I’m going 25mph+?

I was speeding at 25mph+ and the officer gave me a ticket for speeding, not reckless driving. He said he wouldn’t charge me with reckless driving. Is this right or can it change later?

Hey, I think the officer is right. If they didn’t give you a reckless driving charge, it’s probably not gonna change. If it was just speeding, you’re good for now.

Wait, so it can’t get upgraded to reckless later? Even if I was going 25mph over the limit?

@Kei
Yeah, unless they specifically charge you with reckless driving, it stays as speeding. The officer said he won’t, so you’re good.

I think if it’s not mandatory, they can’t just change the charge to reckless later. It’s like set in stone once they hand you the ticket.

Gotcha, that makes sense. So no surprise reckless driving charge coming later, huh? That would be a relief lol.

Yeah, the officer is the one who decides the charge at the time. If it was only speeding, it’s just a speeding ticket. They can’t just switch it without giving you a new ticket.

Oh, that’s good to know. I was worried they’d hit me with a reckless charge later on.

Just to clarify, what does ‘mandatory’ mean on the ticket? Can you explain that a bit? I’m not totally sure on what that means in this context.

Sure! Mandatory just means you HAVE to appear in court. If it’s not mandatory, you don’t have to go unless you want to fight the ticket. So no mandatory court appearance means it’s just a normal speeding ticket for you.

I had something similar happen to me before. They gave me a speeding ticket, and even though I was speeding like crazy, they didn’t change it to reckless driving. So yeah, I think you’re in the clear.

Nice, that’s reassuring to hear. Thanks for sharing that!
