I was terminated today because of a failed breathalyzer test last Friday. (Texas here) HR said my benefits would end soon, but they might extend them. I’ve worked at the company for over 16 years, so this is really hard to process. I’ll probably need counseling to get through this. Has anyone else dealt with something similar?
Sorry you’re going through this. It might be helpful to keep track of all your conversations with HR to help with negotiating your severance.

Yeah, I’ve been saving all emails and notes from my meetings with HR. Hoping it’ll help when we talk about severance.
Maybe check with an employment attorney? They could help if you feel the termination wasn’t handled properly.

I’m considering that. It feels weird because the breathalyzer situation was sudden, but not sure if it’s worth pursuing legally.
Sorry to hear that. Did HR offer any job transition support?

They haven’t mentioned that yet. I’m thinking of asking next time we have a meeting.
Make sure to push for those extended health benefits, especially with your dental issues. You don’t want to be left without coverage.

Definitely brought that up with HR. They said they’d consider it, so I’m hopeful they’ll come through.
What’s a breathalyzer test exactly? Sorry if it’s a dumb question lol.

Not dumb at all! It’s a test to check alcohol levels in your breath. Some jobs require them if they think you’re under the influence.

Ohh, thanks for explaining that!
