Anyone else confused about Texas Election Code and ballot returns?

Hey, I came across something interesting about Texas Election Code § 86.006 and it got me thinking. The law says that a family member within the second degree of affinity (by marriage) or third degree of consanguinity (by blood), or even a household member can return a ballot for someone else, but only if certain conditions are met. It’s not as simple as just printing or filling out someone’s ballot. They can’t mark the ballot for you, they can only deliver it after you’ve sealed it and filled it out yourself. They also need to sign a statement saying they’re doing this with your consent. So confusing… anyone else have more clarity on this?

I was super confused about this too, lol. I guess it makes sense they need to sign something, but it still seems weird that they can’t help mark the ballot. Just seems like a lot of paperwork for something simple.

I’ve been reading about this too, and it’s pretty clear that you can’t just have someone fill out your ballot, even if they’re a family member. They’re just there to help with the return part, but that’s it.

Anyone else think it’s a bit much that they need to sign a statement? Seems like there should be an easier way to handle this.
