Anyone else dealing with a car that has bad brakes... not sure what to do?

Hey, so I’ve got a 2016 Hyundai Accent and the brakes are seriously bad. I’m pretty sure I need to replace the master cylinder or the ABS system. It’s been two weeks since I’ve driven it because I feel like it’s dangerous, but I’ve already made two payments and have one more due soon. The dealership sold me this car and I think they knew there was something wrong with it, so I’m taking them to mediation next month. Anyone here dealt with something like this? I’m also wondering if I can still get an attorney for a car this old… IDK if they’ll be able to help me. I’m feeling pretty stuck.

Yikes, that sounds like a nightmare! I think you can still get help even if the car’s a few years old, but it’ll probably be tricky to prove the dealership knew about the issues.

Yeah, that’s what I’m worried about… like, how would I even prove they knew? Any advice on that?

@Frost
You’d need proof that they knew about the issue before the sale, like mechanic records or something that shows it was already a problem. It’s tough but not impossible.

I had a similar issue with my used car, and I couldn’t get any warranty support either. I had to pay for the repairs myself. :disappointed:

Ugh, that sucks. I’m hoping I don’t have to go that route. How did you handle it?

@Frost
Honestly, I ended up taking it to a local shop and just paying for the repairs out-of-pocket. It wasn’t cheap, but I needed the car working.

Have you tried getting a second opinion from another mechanic? It’s worth checking if multiple shops are seeing the same issues.

Yeah, I took it to Midas and the dealership, but both said the brakes were fine. It’s only when I drive that I notice the problem.

@Frost
Hmm, maybe get one more opinion? Sometimes mechanics miss things that other shops catch. You might find something they missed.

Good luck with the mediation! Have you checked if there are any recalls or defects for that year/model?

I checked, and they said there were no safety recalls, but I’m still skeptical. I feel like they didn’t fully disclose everything.

@Frost
That’s shady. It’s worth looking into whether there’s anything that was overlooked. You should definitely push the issue during mediation.

I don’t know much about Lemon Law, but if you’re in Hawaii, you should definitely check out if the used car sale counts under the state’s rules. I think they’re pretty strict there.

Thanks for the tip! I’m definitely going to look into that. I had no idea Hawaii had stricter rules for used cars.

@Frost
Yeah, definitely check it out! If they sold you a car that wasn’t fit for use, you might have some legal standing. Good luck!
