Anyone else dealing with a school that just doesn't get it?

My son has been through a lot with his school situation. He was bullied from kindergarten to fourth grade, and after trying parochial schools that didn’t work out, we’re back in public school. He’s got a bunch of challenges, like autism, ADHD, and a few others. I’ve tried getting him placed in a special class, but the school keeps saying he doesn’t qualify. I feel like they’re just pushing him through, and I can’t get them to listen about the bullying either. What else can I do? It’s been so frustrating.

Ugh, that’s so tough. Have you thought about reaching out to an education lawyer? Maybe they could help you navigate the system and get the support your son needs.

I haven’t considered it until now. Honestly, I’m just feeling stuck. I don’t know who else to turn to.

It sounds like they’re really not listening to you. I’d keep pushing for an IEP review and ask for a meeting with the school board. Maybe that’ll get them to take things more seriously.

Yeah, I’ve been pushing for IEP meetings but it feels like they just nod and move on. I’ll try the school board idea, thanks.

I’ve been through something similar with my kid. Honestly, they tried to push my son through too, even though I was begging them for better support. I eventually had to get a lawyer involved to get the right placement.

@Taj
What did the lawyer help with exactly? I’m curious how they helped make a difference.

They helped me advocate for my son’s rights under special ed law, like making sure the school was following the IEP and getting him into the right class. It was a long process, but it was worth it.

Have you tried talking to the superintendent directly? Sometimes they can be more responsive than school officials.

I plan to call the superintendent tomorrow. Hopefully, I can get a real response this time.

That sounds so overwhelming. It’s hard when you just want your kid to be in a safe, supportive environment. I hope it works out soon.

Thanks, I really hope so too. I just want him to get the help he needs.
