Anyone else feel like their right to travel is being blocked?

I’m feeling trapped by local government and it’s like my right to travel is being totally blocked. I’m a veteran, used to be a truck driver, but now as a civilian with a felony (auto theft), I can’t even drive or own a weapon. My mental health has taken a hit over the years. If the NYS DMV would just let me get my license back, I wouldn’t have any issues. Anyone have any idea how I can fix this?

Man, that’s rough. Have you tried contacting the DMV directly or speaking to a lawyer who specializes in driving rights for people with felonies? Maybe there’s a way to get your license reinstated, depending on your case.

@Shay
I’ve been thinking about it, but IDK if it’s even possible. I feel like the system is against me. I’ll definitely look into talking to someone about it though.

I hear you, it’s tough. But in some cases, people with felony convictions can get their rights restored after a certain time, especially if they’ve been keeping a clean record. Maybe it’s worth trying to get legal advice on it.

@Remy
That’s the hope. It’s just been so long, and I don’t know what kind of process it would even be. A lawyer might be the best bet, though.

It sounds like you’re dealing with a lot, and I get why you’d feel like things are stacked against you. If you’re still struggling with mental health too, that could be affecting everything. Have you thought about reaching out to any veterans’ organizations? They might have resources for you.

@Wynn
Yeah, I’ve been talking to some veterans’ groups, but the driving thing just feels like an extra weight. I’ll definitely keep that in mind, though. Thanks!

You should definitely reach out to a lawyer who specializes in both criminal law and driving rights. Some states have programs that allow people with felonies to restore their driving privileges after a certain period. It’s worth investigating, especially if you need to drive for work.

@Quinn
I was hoping there was some kind of program like that. I’ll look into it, for sure. Appreciate the tip!

That sounds frustrating. I know it’s a long shot, but maybe getting a lawyer who specializes in veterans’ rights could help? There might be some special provisions or exceptions for vets like you, especially if it’s affecting your mental health and livelihood.

@Morgan
That’s actually a good idea. I’ll definitely ask around and see if I can find someone who handles both. Thanks!
