I was in the U.S. Army for 9 years, had 4 contracts, and got honorably discharged from the first three. The last one though was a bad conduct discharge. I’m wondering if I’m eligible for VA benefits after all that? I’ve already applied, but still no luck… anyone else go through this?
Yeah, that’s a tricky one. From what I know, bad conduct discharges can often disqualify you from VA benefits, but you might still have a chance if you can get your discharge upgraded.

Wait, how do you get your discharge upgraded? I thought that was just it once you’re out.
@Lennon
You can apply for a discharge upgrade through the Discharge Review Board (DRB) within 15 years. If it’s been longer, you can go through the Board of Corrections for Military Records (BCMR).
I had a similar situation, but I was able to get my records corrected. It takes time, but I suggest gathering all your supporting documents, like proof of good conduct after discharge.

What kind of documents did you use for your case? I’m just trying to figure out what else I need.
@Blake
I used job references, educational records, and even some volunteer work I’d done. Basically, anything that shows you’ve turned things around since discharge.
Just FYI, even if your bad conduct discharge doesn’t qualify you, you can still apply to have your discharge status corrected. It’s a long process, but it’s worth trying.

Oh, I didn’t know that. Thanks for the heads up! I’ll look into it more.
I agree with everyone else. If your last discharge is the issue, it might be worth applying for an upgrade. The process can be tough, but it’s definitely worth a shot.
Just to clarify… so only the last discharge affects your VA benefits, not the previous ones? That’s what I’m understanding here.

Yeah, exactly. They only care about the last discharge when it comes to benefits eligibility. My previous ones were honorable, but it’s that last one that matters.
