Anyone else struggling with depression after joining the Navy?

Hey everyone, I’ve been having a tough time adjusting to life in the Navy. I’ve always dealt with seasonal depression, but since joining, it feels like it’s hitting me earlier and harder. Boot camp was rough, but now that I’m in A-School, it’s overwhelming being away from home. I’ve lost my appetite, I’m not sleeping well, and I’m thinking about talking to medical to explore getting an ELS (early separation). Has anyone else been through this? Any advice would be appreciated.

I’ve been there. Seasonal depression can be brutal, especially when you’re away from family. Have you thought about reaching out to a counselor on base?

Yeah, I’m planning to. Just nervous about how it’ll go. Do you know if they’re helpful?

Counselors on base can be hit or miss, but it’s worth a try. They might also connect you to off-base resources.

What’s an ELS? Sorry if that’s a dumb question.

Not a dumb question at all! It’s short for early separation, basically a way to leave the Navy if you’re struggling.

Yeah, it’s a medical discharge if you can’t adjust. They’ll look at your mental health records to decide.

If it started in boot camp, it might help to document everything. That’ll make it easier to get support or an ELS.

Good idea. I’ll start jotting things down. Thanks for the tip!

Losing your appetite and sleep sounds rough. Maybe check if there’s a support group on base?

There’s usually something like that. They can be a good way to meet people who get what you’re going through.

I’ll ask around. Thanks for the suggestion!

Being away from home can make everything worse. Do you have anyone to talk to regularly, like family or friends?

I call home sometimes, but it’s hard with the time difference. Maybe I need to make more of an effort.

Even short calls can help. Try setting a regular time to check in—it gives you something to look forward to.
