I’ve been in the reserves for a while now and it’s honestly getting in the way of my civilian life. I signed a 6-year contract not fully understanding what it would entail. Now, I’m wondering if there’s any way to leave the Marine Corps early. Anyone know what options I might have?
I’m in the same boat! It’s been tough balancing everything. I heard talking to your commanding officer might help. Have you tried that yet?

I haven’t yet, but I guess that’s a good place to start. Thanks for the suggestion!
I’ve been trying to get out early too, but I found out that talking to a military lawyer is the best route. They can help you understand your options more clearly.

Thanks, I hadn’t thought about consulting a lawyer. Do you know if there’s a specific type of lawyer I should look for?

Yeah, a military lawyer who specializes in reserve matters. They’ll know the ins and outs of the process.
You might be eligible for a medical discharge if you have health issues that prevent you from fulfilling your duties. I would check with a military medical professional about that.

I don’t have any medical issues, but good to know in case anything changes. Appreciate the info!
A family hardship discharge is also a thing if you’re dealing with a tough situation at home. If your family’s going through some severe stuff, it might help.

That’s interesting. I didn’t know that was an option. I’ll definitely keep that in mind.
A moral discharge is another option, but it’s a bit more complicated. I think that’s for when your views or character change to the point where you can’t serve anymore.

I guess that would be for extreme cases. Hopefully, it won’t come to that, but I’ll look into it.
