Hey, I’m looking for some help restoring my driver’s license in Michigan. It was revoked 15 years ago because I didn’t pay the driver’s responsibility fee. I’ve since moved to FL and now live in NV, but I can’t get my NV license because of the MI hold. Anyone know what steps I should take to fix this? Or any attorneys who specialize in this kinda thing?
I had a similar issue a few years ago. Turns out Michigan cleared all that responsibility fee stuff in 2018, but you still need to apply for reinstatement. Have you done that yet?

Yeah, I’ve applied a few times but they keep denying me. The hearings they offer have crazy requirements like drug tests and stuff, but I already settled my drug offense with the court… IDK what’s up with that.
@Steve
Sounds like they’re being extra with the paperwork. I’d recommend finding a lawyer who specializes in Michigan license issues. A good lawyer can help with all the documentation and hearings.
I’ve heard of people who were able to get around these issues by paying a lawyer to handle it all, but yeah, it can get expensive. Some charge up to $5,000. Not sure if that’s worth it or not.

That’s exactly what some of the lawyers I contacted told me. They say I have no choice but to pay. Just seems so much for something that happened 15 years ago, lol.
@Steve
I get it. It’s crazy. If you can, try contacting someone who specializes in interstate license issues, they might have more affordable options.
Isn’t there a way to just go directly to the Michigan Secretary of State? You might be able to clear up the hold without going through all those hearings.

I was thinking about that. It might be a good idea to go straight to them. I’ll try contacting them again and see if there’s any way to resolve this without all the extra stuff.
Just FYI, Michigan may not care if you’re living in another state. I would recommend getting a lawyer with experience in these cases, especially for out-of-state drivers. It could make the process faster.
@Afton
Thanks for the tip! I’ll keep looking for someone with experience in interstate license issues. Hopefully that helps.
This is tough. If you’re getting nowhere with hearings, you might want to consider appealing the decisions or asking for a formal review. That’s worked for others in similar situations.

I’ll definitely try that if I can. Just seems like such a slow process. Hopefully I can get some answers soon.
