Hey, I’m an E7 in the Marine Corps and I’ve been in for 14 years. I’m supposed to reenlist next June, but I recently got a DWI. I have another NJP in my record, but it wasn’t related to alcohol. I’m worried about my chances of reenlisting now. Do I still have a shot or is my career over? Any advice would be appreciated!
Man, I feel for you. I know a couple of guys who’ve been in similar situations. It’s tough, but it’s not over yet. You can always put in for a waiver, it just depends on how things play out. You might get lucky.
@Thorne
Yeah, waivers are possible but it’s really up to your command. I had a buddy who got one after a similar incident, but he had a clean record otherwise. Good luck!
Wait, so you had another NJP before? What was that one for?

Yeah, it was for a liberty violation during a MEU. I missed curfew while taking care of an intoxicated officer. I didn’t have a chance to fight it since it happened while deployed. Not exactly a fun experience…

Ugh, that sounds rough. Hope things turn around for you. If you have a good record otherwise, you might still be able to work something out.
Honestly, your best bet is to keep working with your civilian lawyer to drag things out while the military is waiting on the verdict. I think that’ll help. Just make sure you stay squared away otherwise!
@CourtroomWizard
Thanks, I’m trying to stay positive. It’s just frustrating with the uncertainty. I’ve got a family to take care of, and a new one on the way. So I really want to make sure I can provide for them.
I’ve been there. My brother-in-law got into some trouble with a DWI too and had to fight for a waiver. It took some time but he got it. The military does take things seriously, but if you’ve been a good Marine overall, that counts for a lot.
@Finch
That’s reassuring, thanks. I’ve been a pretty solid Marine up until now, so I’m hoping that helps. I just want to make sure my family’s taken care of, you know?
I know the wait is tough, but hang in there. Just keep doing the right thing, stay in touch with your career counselor, and see if you can secure that waiver. It’s a long shot, but it’s worth trying.

Thanks! I’ll keep pushing. Hoping everything works out, especially with the baby on the way. Appreciate the support.
