Anyone know how to deal with a landlord ignoring repairs?

So my landlord has been ignoring our requests for two repairs for over 2 years now. It’s getting frustrating. We’ve been patient, but I think it’s time to take action. Anyone else been through something like this?

Ugh, that sounds so annoying. Have you tried sending them a formal written notice? Sometimes they need a little extra push.

Yeah, we’ve been living here for 8 or 9 years, and the new people took over about 3 years ago. We’re supposed to have a rent-to-own agreement, but can’t find our lease. It’s a mess.

Wait, you mentioned rent-to-own… Did you sign a different kind of agreement? Or is it like a regular lease?

Supposedly rent-to-own, but honestly, that’s not our issue right now. Just want these repairs done.

Bro, if they’ve been ignoring you for that long, might be time to get Legal Aid involved. They can help you figure out your rights.

That’s what I’m thinking. I have no idea where to even start though… Gastonia, NC here. Anyone know where I should go?

IDK specifics for Gastonia, but check out your city’s Code Enforcement Division. They handle complaints and stuff like that.

I had a similar situation. Ended up documenting EVERYTHING and then reached out to Legal Aid. Helped a ton.

Good to know, thanks. What kind of stuff should I be documenting?

Dates, photos of the issues, and any convo with your landlord. Even if you talked to them in person, follow up with a text or email so you have it in writing.

Honestly, I’d just stop paying rent until they fix it. Why keep paying if they aren’t holding up their end?

Careful with that. Not all states allow you to withhold rent without jumping through some hoops first. Could backfire.

Yeah, I’d rather not risk any legal issues. Just want this resolved without more headaches.

You can also try small claims court if it gets really bad. Especially if you’ve had to pay out of pocket for anything because of the delays.

What’s small claims court?

It’s like a court for minor disputes where you don’t need a lawyer. Good for getting money back for stuff like repair costs if your landlord refuses to pay.
