Anyone know how to extend a jurisdictional statement deadline?

I’m really hoping someone here knows about appellate court stuff… I filed an appeal and just got notified that my jurisdictional statement is due this Friday. I called the court, but they only extended the deadline for my opening brief, not the jurisdictional statement. Is there something I can file to get more time? My lawyer isn’t responding, so I’m pretty lost here. Any help would be so appreciated!

I’ve been there… I think you might need to file a motion for extension for the jurisdictional statement. Have you tried calling the clerk for more info?

Good idea, DEF! I’ll call the clerk and see if they can give me the details. Thanks!

Yup, the clerk can usually walk you through what you need. I had to do something similar and they were super helpful.

You might need to explain the grounds for your appeal in that statement… like any biases or errors the judge made. It’s tough but doable!

Thanks, JKL. Yeah, the judge was super biased. Any tips on how to put that into the statement? I don’t want to mess this up.

Totally. Just describe what happened clearly, like any times she didn’t let you present evidence or seemed unfair. Stick to facts!

Is there any way you could file electronically? Sometimes courts allow e-filing for last-minute stuff.

That’d be ideal! I’ll ask the clerk about e-filing. Didn’t even think of that, so thanks for the suggestion.

You could try to ask for a Zoom link or virtual hearing to explain your need for a continuance. It might be worth a shot if they allow that!

Oh, that’s a good idea. I’ll check if they’re allowing any Zoom options. Might be easier than mailing stuff.

If they do Zoom, it might be quicker to get an answer too. Good luck!

FYI, if you miss the deadline, it could mess up your appeal. Definitely try the motion route if the clerk doesn’t have other options.

Ah, I was afraid of that :grimacing:. Thanks for the heads up, VWX. Guess I’ll push for that extension motion ASAP.
