Anyone know how to get a copy of a lost car title in Rhode Island?

I lost my car title and I’m trying to figure out how to get a duplicate in Rhode Island. I’m not sure what steps I need to take. Anyone been through this before? Do I need to go to the DMV or can I do it online? Any help would be appreciated!

I had the same issue a few months ago. You need to fill out an ‘Application for Duplicate Title’ form on the DMV website. If you’re stuck, they also have it available at the DMV office in person.

Yeah, I did it online. It was super easy once I found the form. Just make sure you’ve got your ID ready to prove ownership.

Exactly, ID is a must. If you have a lien on your car, they might ask for extra paperwork. Just FYI.

Don’t forget about the fee! It’s around $51 for a duplicate title, so make sure to pay that when you submit the form. It’s mentioned on the DMV website.

Oh, good to know! I was wondering if there would be any extra costs. Thanks for the heads up!

If you’re in Rhode Island, they send the title by mail after processing. So, you’ll have to wait a bit for it to come through, but it’s pretty straightforward.

I was actually worried it would take a while. Glad to hear it’s a simple process once it’s submitted. Thanks for the info!

You can also contact the DMV by email or phone if you need help. But I’d say go with the website to avoid the wait time.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll try the website first and see if that works. Fingers crossed it’s smooth sailing!

Just make sure all your info is correct on the form. If there’s any mistake, it can delay the process. If you’ve emailed them already, be sure to follow up just to make sure they got everything.

I’ve emailed them and I’m still waiting. Do you know how long it usually takes after they receive everything?

@Jai
It usually takes a few weeks for them to process it. You should get a notice once they’ve processed your request. Just keep an eye on your mailbox!
