Hey all, I’m a union rep in Illinois, and our contract says we need to file grievances within 20 work days of noticing an issue. Does anyone know if salary-related problems follow a different timeline?
Usually, salary issues fall under the same timeline, but I’d double-check just to be sure. How long has this been going on?

It’s been an ongoing thing. Every time they get paid, it seems to restart the issue.

If it’s happening each payday, that could help you argue it’s an ongoing issue instead of a one-time thing.
Are you dealing with extra work that’s not getting proper pay? That could definitely count as something to grieve!

Yeah, teachers are taking on double classes but not getting the extra pay our contract says they should. It’s a mess.

If the contract supports that, sounds like you have a solid case. Maybe emphasize the extra workload in the grievance?
Just to clarify, you’re allowed to talk about these issues on-site without losing pay, right? That’s a good setup if you need to organize a grievance.

Yep, we can investigate and discuss during work hours. Makes it a bit easier to coordinate everyone.

Lucky! Not every union gets that. Hopefully, it helps you gather support for the grievance.
I’d avoid using work email for anything related to union stuff, even if it’s just to set up meetings. Better safe than sorry.

Yeah, true. We’ve been using interoffice mail instead, just to keep it low-key.

Smart move. Work email can be risky. Some employers watch it pretty closely.
If this involves multiple teachers across different buildings, can you combine it all into one big grievance?

Yeah, I think we can. Our contract says the grievance can go to multiple supervisors if it affects multiple people.

That should work then! Just be sure each supervisor knows it’s a group grievance to keep things streamlined.
