Anyone know the grace period for renewing a DL after moving?

I moved from Texas to Illinois over 90 days ago, but I couldn’t renew my driver’s license until recently because of a back injury from an accident. Do I have a one-year grace period to renew it, or am I out of luck? Also, the DL bureau said I can’t use my original 1947 birth certificate—it has to be certified, and they want $29 for that. Feels kinda like a money grab. Anyone dealt with this?

Pretty sure Illinois doesn’t give a full year to renew after moving. You should check with the Secretary of State’s office just to be safe.

Yeah, I haven’t contacted them yet. Just local offices. Guess I need to call and confirm.

What’s the Secretary of State’s office?

@Quincy
It’s basically the DMV in Illinois. They handle licenses, vehicle registration, all that stuff.

I had to get a certified birth certificate too. They wouldn’t take my original one either. Super annoying.

Yeah, like… what’s wrong with the original? It’s been good for decades!

I think the grace period is only 60 days after moving, not a full year.

Dang, I might be out of luck then. Hope there’s some flexibility with the injury situation.

That $29 for a certified birth certificate is just another way to squeeze money out of people. Feels like a scam.

Right?? Like, why isn’t the original one good enough?

If your license is expired, just be careful driving. You don’t want to get a ticket on top of all this.

Yeah, I haven’t been driving just to be safe. No legal issues so far, thankfully.
