Applying for Security Clearance with an OTH Discharge... Any Advice?

I’m planning to apply for a security clearance but got an Other Than Honorable (OTH) discharge from the military. Anyone been through this and got some tips? I know it can complicate things, so I’m just trying to figure out the best way to handle it. Looking for legal support too. Thanks!

Hey, I went through a similar situation. They do look at everything with a ‘whole-person’ concept, so your discharge isn’t necessarily a dealbreaker. Just be honest and ready to explain what happened. I think they care more about what you’ve done since then.

@Noah
Thanks for that! Good to know. I’ll definitely be transparent. Did they ask a lot about the circumstances around your discharge?

@Noah
Yeah, they wanted details. Just be prepared to explain any circumstances that led to it, like personal or family issues, and mention any positive changes you’ve made since.

Another tip—gather some character references. Letters from current employers or people who can vouch for you since your discharge will help a lot. It shows you’ve moved forward and are stable.

That’s a good idea, thanks! I have a couple of people who could write something. I’ll reach out to them.

Make sure you have all your service records ready, too. Anything positive from your time in the military can help balance things out.

Exactly. They want the full picture, so anything that shows your strengths and reliability is a plus.

Don’t stress too much about the discharge itself—just be prepared. They’re more likely to be concerned if you left things out or weren’t upfront.

Makes sense. Honesty is definitely the best policy with this. Thanks!

If they call you in for an interview, take it as a chance to tell your side. Just be calm and focus on how you’ve grown since then.

Appreciate that! I’ll remember to keep it calm and positive if it comes to that.

Yeah, just own it and show you’ve moved forward. They want to see responsibility and honesty.
