Being sued for a motorcycle accident... any advice?

Hey everyone, I just found out I’m being sued over a motorcycle accident that happened two years ago. Back then, the motorcyclist was deemed at fault, and the case was closed. Now they’re suing me, and I’m feeling totally lost. The paperwork says it could be over $50,000, and my insurance company is saying they won’t cover me because they claim there wasn’t insurance on the vehicle at the time, even though I had a policy number. Anyone dealt with something like this? Any advice on what to do next?

That sounds super stressful. Did the lawsuit paperwork say what exactly they’re suing you for?

Not really. It’s just some minimal info. I think there’s another document coming with all the details, though.

Yeah, that’s called the complaint. It’ll have all the specifics. Did you get a lawyer yet?

Wait, your insurance says you weren’t covered? That’s wild if you had a policy number. Did you check the crash report?

Yeah, the state police crash report shows our insurance info and says we were covered. IDK why the insurance company is acting like this.

@Hale
If the report says you were covered, your insurance company might be wrong. You might wanna talk to a lawyer ASAP.

If you were driving someone else’s car, the owner’s insurance might be involved. Were you the owner or just the driver?

I was just the driver. Would that make a difference?

@Hale
Could be! Sometimes the owner’s insurance is on the hook. Def talk to a lawyer to sort it out.

Honestly, you should try contacting your local bar association. They can help you find a lawyer who knows how to handle this stuff.

Good idea. I didn’t think of that. Thanks!

IDK if this helps, but law schools sometimes have clinics where students (supervised by attorneys) help with cases like this.

Oh, that’s interesting. I’ll look into that too. Thanks for the tip!
