Can a boarding school withdraw a student for a few unexcused absences?

Hey everyone, does anyone know if a boarding school can actually kick out a student just for 3-5 unexcused absences? Trying to get some clarity on this…

I think it depends on the school’s policies. Private schools usually have their own rules, and if it’s in the contract, they might be able to enforce it.

Yeah, a lot of times these policies are in the student handbook or the enrollment agreement. Check those for sure.

@Blane
Good idea, I’ll check the handbook. Wasn’t sure if this is standard or if it varies a lot by school.

In some states, even private schools have to keep attendance records, but they get more flexibility than public schools. Where is this school located?

It’s in California. I thought there might be some rules around this, but not sure how strict they are.

California gives private schools more freedom on policies like this, so it might really depend on the specific school.

Most boarding schools would talk to the parents first and maybe put the student on academic probation or something before going as far as withdrawal.

Yeah, it seems harsh to just withdraw for a few unexcused absences without a warning or probation period.

@Carson
Exactly. If they haven’t taken those steps, maybe you could discuss other options with the administration?

If you haven’t heard back from them yet, definitely follow up. You should at least get a formal decision if they’re taking such a big step.

Good point. I’ll call again on Monday. It’s weird they haven’t sent anything official yet.

Yeah, you deserve a clear answer, especially if it affects tuition or credits. Hope they respond soon!

It’s a good idea to check the attendance policy. Some schools are strict, but others are more flexible, especially if absences are explained.

Right, and sometimes they just need a heads-up if there’s a good reason for missing those days.
