Quick question for everyone – can a student legally record an in-person class without the teacher’s permission? Specifically wondering about rules in California. Has anyone dealt with this?
In California, it’s actually illegal to secretly record someone without their consent. So, a student would need permission to record the class.

Yeah, California has some strict privacy laws. Even if it’s just for notes, permission is still required.
@Rowan
Good to know! I thought it might be okay for personal use, but I’ll keep that in mind.
Also, teachers’ lectures are often considered intellectual property, so you’d need permission to record them, even if it’s just audio.

Does that mean if they give permission, it’s fine to record?
@Remy
Yep! As long as you have permission, it should be okay. Just make sure it’s clear and preferably in writing.
I think a lot of schools have policies about recording. You might want to check if there’s anything specific for your class or school.

Good point! Sometimes it’s covered in the syllabus or school handbook.
@Lennox
I’ll check with the school policies too. Didn’t think of that, thanks!
If it’s about other students’ responses, that’s a big no-no in California without their consent. Privacy laws are pretty strict here.

Makes sense, especially with privacy concerns nowadays. Thanks for the clarification!
I’d just ask the teacher directly if you really need to record. They might be okay with it as long as you’re upfront.

Agreed, it’s better to ask than risk any issues. Plus, some teachers are pretty chill about it if they know in advance.
