Can employers reverse paychecks without notice

So here’s a situation I’m curious about: can an employer deposit your paycheck and bonus into your account, then reverse it without telling you? It seems shady to me, but I’d love to hear your thoughts or experiences.

That sounds sketchy. In most places, employers can’t just take back wages without saying something. Are you sure it wasn’t a mistake?

Yeah, they didn’t say a word about it. I only noticed after checking my account. What could they claim it as?

@Ziv
They might argue it was an overpayment or something, but they’re supposed to notify you first and maybe set up a plan if it’s legit.

It depends on the state. Some places have stricter rules about wage reversals. Did they even explain why they did it?

Not at all. It’s just frustrating because now I’m short on cash. I didn’t even know they could legally do this.

@Ziv
I get that. Check your state’s labor laws. They usually have rules about unauthorized deductions from pay.

Pretty sure they can’t just reverse a payment without talking to you. Did you sign anything that allows it?

Not that I know of. I think the only thing I signed was standard payroll paperwork when I started.

@Ziv
Then I’d say it’s worth asking HR or even contacting a labor lawyer. This doesn’t sound right.

This could fall under wage theft if they didn’t notify you. Employers have to follow specific rules about this stuff.

I hadn’t thought about wage theft. Would this apply even if they claim it was a mistake?

@Ziv
Yeah, even with a mistake, they’re usually required to work out a repayment plan or notify you beforehand.

Have you checked with your bank? Sometimes they can help figure out what exactly happened with the reversal.

Good idea. I’ll give them a call and see if they have any details on why this happened.

@Ziv
Yeah, they might even have a way to flag it as unauthorized if the employer didn’t have the right to do it.
