I’m currently in the military, and my command is saying I need to get a civilian driver’s license even though driving isn’t part of my specific job. I don’t feel comfortable with it and don’t want to get one. Can they really make me do it? Has anyone else dealt with this?
As far as I know, no one can force you to get a license unless driving is required for your job. Is that the case here?

Nope, driving isn’t part of my role, and everyone else in my unit is already qualified to drive.

If it’s not part of your job, they can’t legally make you get one. But in the military, if they issue an order, you might not have much choice.

Just curious—why don’t you want to get one? Is it the process or something else?
Your command can’t force you legally, but if they issue an order, refusing it might get you in trouble. Are they giving you an official order?

Not officially, just pressuring me a lot and making it seem like I have no choice.

If they’re not giving an official order, they might just be testing to see if you’ll comply. Maybe stand your ground politely?
Isn’t it easier just to get one? You don’t have to use it if you don’t want to.

It’s not about ease—it’s a principle thing for me. I don’t want to be forced into something I’m not comfortable with.

Totally get that. If it’s not required by law or your role, you have a valid reason to push back.
What happens if they officially order you? I’ve seen people get stuck in these situations before.

If it’s an official order, refusing it can lead to disciplinary action. It’s a tough spot to be in.

That’s my worry. I feel like I might not have much choice if they escalate it.

Maybe talk to JAG? They might give you advice on whether this kind of order is enforceable.
IDK, it seems odd for them to push this if you don’t need to drive. Maybe there’s a reason they haven’t shared yet?

Possibly, but they haven’t explained anything beyond ‘just do it.’ That’s why I’m frustrated.

Military commands can be vague sometimes. Maybe ask them directly why it’s necessary?
