So here’s the situation—I’ve been dealing with a retired ex-policeman/private investigator who came onto my property without permission. He walked across my garden and down the road where my family is. I’ve been feeling intimidated and honestly really worried about this. I haven’t filed a police report yet because of his background, but I’m considering trying again to get a restraining order to protect my family and myself. Has anyone been through something similar? What should I do next?
That sounds really scary. Did he say anything while he was on your property?

No, he didn’t say anything, but just him being there felt like intimidation. I don’t even know why he was there.

It’s definitely intimidation. Document everything—time, date, what he did. It’ll help if you file a report or go for a restraining order.
Why haven’t you filed a police report yet? I know his background might make it intimidating, but they can’t ignore a trespassing complaint.

I guess I’ve been hesitant because of his connections as a retired cop and investigator. Feels like it won’t go anywhere.

I get that, but his background doesn’t mean he’s above the law. The police are required to take reports seriously.
You can definitely apply for a restraining order. Do you have any evidence of his behavior, like photos or witnesses?

No photos, unfortunately, but my family saw him. Would their statements be enough?

Yes, witness statements can help! Even just your own written account of what happened is valuable. Start documenting everything.
It sounds like harassment to me. Have you spoken to a lawyer yet? They can help with both the restraining order and legal advice.

Not yet, but I’m thinking about it. Do lawyers usually help with restraining orders?

Absolutely. A lawyer can guide you through the process and make sure you’re protected. Definitely worth reaching out.
If he keeps showing up or you feel unsafe, don’t wait. Call the police and file a report immediately.

You’re right. I just need to work up the courage to do it. This whole thing has been so stressful.

You’ve got this. The law is on your side, no matter who he is. Just take it one step at a time.
