Can I join the military with uterine fibroids?

Hey everyone, I’ve been thinking about joining the military, but I have uterine fibroids and I’m wondering if this could disqualify me. I haven’t picked a branch yet because I want to figure this out first. Any insights?

It might depend on your symptoms. Like, if you’re having heavy bleeding or other issues, it could be disqualifying. But I’ve heard you can get a waiver if it doesn’t affect your duties.

Oh, okay. I didn’t think about waivers. Do you know how the waiver process works?

Not exactly, but I think a recruiter can guide you. They’d know what paperwork you need and how to start.

Honestly, recruiters are your best bet. They deal with this stuff all the time and can tell you right away if it’s a dealbreaker.

Good idea. I’ll reach out to one. Do you know if recruiters cost anything or are they free?

Totally free! Just be upfront about your medical history so they can help you properly.

Are you having symptoms from the fibroids? Like, are they enlarged or causing irregular bleeding? That’s usually what they check for.

I have mild symptoms, but nothing major. Should I mention that to the recruiter?

Yeah, always be honest about it. Better to get everything out in the open now than have issues later.

What branch are you thinking about joining? Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Space Force?

Haven’t decided yet. Do you know if some branches are more lenient about medical conditions?

Not 100% sure, but I think each branch has slightly different medical standards. A recruiter can explain more.

FYI, being an MSc holder could be a huge plus! Some branches might offer officer positions based on your education.

Oh, that’s interesting! I didn’t even think about that. Do officer roles have different requirements?

Yeah, usually they do, but your education might help bypass some hurdles. Definitely worth asking a recruiter!
