Hey all, quick question. I’m currently in the US on vacation and just got an excessive speeding ticket. I’m a citizen of Germany and planning to go back soon. I hired a lawyer who says I can leave and he’ll handle the court stuff for me. Anyone know if it’s really fine to go?
Yeah, as long as your lawyer is showing up for you in court, you should be okay. They’re not going to detain you just for a speeding ticket.

Totally agree. They only hold you up if it’s something more serious. I’ve left the US with unpaid tickets before, no issues.

Thanks! Yeah, it’s just excessive speeding, but it’s still a big deal where I’m from. Glad to hear it’s not that strict here.
You’re fine as long as you don’t plan to dodge it completely. They might just keep it on file, and if you return to the US, it could come up then.

Good to know! I definitely plan to handle it through my lawyer. Just want to avoid being detained for something like this.
If you’ve got representation, it should be all set. Out of curiosity, what did the lawyer say would happen if you just didn’t go to court?

He said they might detain me if I come back, but I won’t be held just for leaving without paying a ticket.

Makes sense! It’s mostly about getting it cleared up before your next visit.
Oh wow, you’re from Germany? It’s a good move to get a lawyer on this. As long as they’re handling it, no worries!

Yeah, figured it’s best to play it safe! Thanks for the reassurance!
Just make sure you stay in touch with your lawyer. They’ll probably let you know if anything important comes up with the case.

Yep, definitely! I’ve got their contact info saved.
