Can I still get benefits from Hawaii if I'm temporarily in Minnesota?

I have an apartment in Hawaii that’s still my primary residence, but I’ve been in Minnesota taking care of my mom. She just passed, and I’m here for a few months. I’m on Medicaid and food stamps through Hawaii. Can I continue getting those benefits if Hawaii is my legal address, or do I need to change something since I’m living in Minnesota right now?

Yeah, I had a similar situation. As long as you’re still living in Hawaii and it’s your primary residence, you should be okay. Just be cautious if you need medical care in Minnesota—it might trigger a check on your residency.

@Kai
That’s good to know! I didn’t realize they could check if you’re using services in a different state.

I think as long as you’re visiting and not permanently moving, you should be fine. I’ve heard it’s okay for short stays like yours.

Yeah, that makes sense. Thanks for the reassurance!

I believe you can keep your benefits if you’re only away for less than 60 days. Just keep everything documented in case they ask for proof you’ll return to Hawaii.

That’s what I was told too. It’s all about proving you’re planning to go back.

I had a friend who was in the same situation. She was able to maintain her Hawaii benefits even though she was in another state for a few months. Just make sure your Hawaii address is still on file as your primary residence.

@Kit
Good point! I’ll make sure to keep everything updated with Hawaii.

Sorry to hear about your mom. Hope things go smoothly with your situation. Do you know if your Medicaid and food stamps are tied to your Hawaii address or just your residency?

Thanks! And yeah, I think it’s tied to my Hawaii address, but I’ll double-check with them just to be sure.
