My granddaughter just turned 18 and is still in high school. We’re planning a domestic flight soon, and I was wondering—can her school ID with a picture and her birth certificate be used as ID to fly? She also has an expired passport and her social security card. Anyone know if this is enough?
Yeah, I think the school ID and birth certificate should be fine for a domestic flight. The TSA doesn’t always need a government-issued ID if you have other documents to verify.

Thanks! Would bringing the expired passport help too? Not sure if they’ll even look at it.

Definitely bring it! Even though it’s expired, it can still work as extra verification. The more documents, the better.
Does she have anything else with a picture, like a library card or student ID from another year?

Just the school ID she uses now. Would that be enough?

It should be okay if it’s recent and has her picture. But yeah, bring the birth certificate and anything else, just in case!
FYI, TSA usually works with you if you don’t have a standard ID. She’s 18, so they might ask more questions, but it’s not a big deal.

That’s good to know. We’ll make sure to explain if they ask about her ID situation.
IDK about the expired passport being necessary, but better safe than sorry. TSA can be picky sometimes.

Yeah, I’ll bring everything we’ve got just to be sure. Thanks!

Wait, what’s TSA? I don’t fly often lol.

Oh, sorry! TSA is the Transportation Security Administration—they handle security at the airport.
She should be fine with those documents. My cousin flew with just a birth certificate and school ID last year!

That’s reassuring! Thanks for sharing. I feel a bit more confident now.
