Can my landlord put a camera in my rented workspace...?

I’m an independent stylist and rent a small suite. The owner wants to put a camera in there, and I’m not sure if that’s legal. Anyone know if I have any rights here?

Usually, they can legally put cameras in rented spaces as long as it’s not in areas where privacy is expected, like bathrooms.

Makes sense, but I sometimes change in there when the restroom is full. Wondering if that matters?

Hmm, tricky… but if it’s in your workspace, privacy laws are different. Maybe talk to the owner about it?

In NYC, I think it’s legal to have cameras in business spaces as long as it’s not where people undress.

That’s helpful, thanks! I do some waxing services in there though, so IDK if that makes it more private?

@Emerson
It could be! If it’s recording that kind of stuff, it might be worth pushing back a bit.

If there’s audio recording, that’s usually another story. Audio has stricter laws than just video.

Oh, good to know! I talk with clients about personal stuff sometimes. Wonder if that counts?

Yeah, definitely check that part. Recording conversations might be an overstep.

Honestly, if it feels invasive, bring it up with the owner. You could ask to keep the camera out of certain areas.

I think I’ll try that. Maybe they’d be open to keeping it out of the main area I use with clients.

Sounds like they’re just trying to cover all areas for security, but it’s worth negotiating for some privacy.

For sure. I get the security angle, but there should be a balance, right?
