Can my license be suspended if I didn’t return my plates?

So my car got repo’d a while back, and I didn’t take the plates off before it was towed. Now my license is suspended, and I’m wondering if it’s because of those plates. Anyone know if that could be the reason?

Yeah, I think that could be it. If the DMV thinks the car is still registered to you but uninsured, they might suspend your license.

Oh, makes sense. I never even thought about that. Do you know if I need to turn in the plates or just call them?

Probably best to turn in the plates just to be safe. You could also call DMV and ask if that’s the reason for your suspension.

I had a similar thing happen with my old car. Not turning in the plates can mess with your record since it looks like an uninsured vehicle.

Thanks! Guess I’ll be visiting the DMV soon. Would’ve been nice if they sent me a heads up or something.

Usually they send out a letter explaining the suspension. Did you get anything in the mail?

Not that I remember, but I’ll check again.

You could try customer service too. I had an issue like this, and they were able to help me sort it over the phone.

DMV suspensions can be annoying, but as long as you turn in the plates, it should fix the issue. Good luck!

I’ve heard DMV might let you pay a small fee instead of returning the plates, but that could depend on your state.
