Hey, I’ve got a question about vehicle registration laws in New Jersey. I recently moved here from out of state, and I’m not sure about the rules. I’ve heard you need to register within 60 days of moving, but I’m a bit confused about the details. Does anyone have experience with this? Any tips on what documents I need or any other important info? I’d really appreciate it!
Yeah, I had to do the same thing last year. The 60-day rule is definitely real. You’ll need proof of ID, your vehicle title, proof of insurance, and sometimes an emissions or safety inspection depending on your car. Just make sure you’ve got everything in order to avoid delays!
@Ren
Oh nice, thanks for the heads-up! I wasn’t sure about the inspection part. I’ll double-check if my car needs it.
@Ren
No problem! If your car’s from out of state, they might need the inspection, yeah. But definitely check first.
I’m in the same boat, just moved here a few months ago. I was told you also have to switch your insurance over to a New Jersey policy too. Out-of-state coverage won’t cut it once you’re a resident.

Oh wow, I didn’t realize that. I thought my old policy would work for a bit longer. Thanks for the heads-up!

Yeah, it’s definitely a thing. I had to make sure my insurance was updated right away, otherwise they could invalidate your registration.
Hey, I’ve got a question on this too. What if you move to Jersey, but you’re still working in another state? Do you have to pay taxes there or is it all about where you live?

You’ll still be paying taxes in New Jersey if that’s where you live. It’s where you reside that counts for taxes, not where you work. But yeah, if you’re working in a different state, you might also need to file taxes there depending on the rules.

Got it, thanks! I was a little confused about that part. So, even though I work in PA, Jersey is where I’ll file.
I had the same issue a few years ago. The DMV is pretty strict about the 60 days, so I’d make sure to get everything done ASAP. If you don’t, you could face penalties or a late fee, which is never fun.
@Tory
Ugh, I don’t want to deal with fees! I’ll get on it ASAP. Thanks for the reminder!
@Tory
No problem! Better to get it done sooner rather than later. Hope everything goes smoothly for you!
Just a heads-up, I was told if you’re a resident of New Jersey, but your vehicle’s still registered in another state, you could get into trouble. They can issue a citation or fine if you don’t update your registration quickly enough. So, definitely make it a priority.
@Clooney
Thanks for that! I didn’t realize how strict they were about it. I’ll get my car switched over this week.
@Clooney
No problem! It’s better to get it sorted out quickly, trust me. I didn’t want to deal with any fines.
