Can someone else rent an apartment for us if we have no credit or income?

Hi everyone,

My girlfriend and I are just out of our teens and have no credit history or income because we live in a remote area in Michigan. We have about $8-9k saved for rent, bills, and food, and we want to move soon for college. Since we have no credit or income, no apartments are willing to lease to us.

Would it be illegal if someone else rented an apartment for us while we paid them the rent? We wouldn’t be on the lease as no places we have contacted allow cosigners/guarantors. What could happen if we got caught?
