In California, can a child taking special education classes with a modified curriculum still earn a high school diploma? I know A-G requirements are for college-bound students, but I’m wondering if a non A-G diploma is possible. Anyone have experience with this?
Yes, they can! My kiddo is in special ed and on a modified curriculum. As long as they meet district requirements and what’s in their IEP, they can still earn a diploma.

That’s great to hear! Does this mean the diploma won’t be A-G approved but still counts as a diploma?

Exactly, it’s a non A-G diploma. It won’t qualify them for CSU or UC directly, but it’s still recognized by the state.
In our district, it depends on the student’s IEP team. They set the graduation requirements based on what’s appropriate for the student’s abilities.

Good to know! I’ll talk to our IEP team to understand what’s possible for my child.

Definitely! They’ll guide you on the best path, whether it’s a diploma or a certificate of completion.
If your child is in mild/moderate classes for core subjects, they might still qualify for a non A-G diploma. I know some students in my kid’s school who received it.

Thank you! That sounds like it’s what I was hoping for.
Be sure to check with your district, as each has specific criteria. Some allow modified diplomas if the IEP requirements are met.

Got it! I’ll definitely look into the district’s criteria to make sure we’re on track.

The district usually has a breakdown of what’s required, so it should be pretty clear.
It can be confusing, but generally, a student can earn a non A-G diploma through their modified curriculum as long as they meet their IEP goals.

Thanks! This clears things up a lot. I didn’t realize the IEP goals played such a big part in graduation.

They really do! It’s all about meeting the standards that are right for each student.
