Can’t find title for my father-in-law’s car... any advice?

So my father-in-law passed away recently, and now I’m trying to deal with his car registration. I can’t find the title anywhere and I’m not sure what to do next. I’ve already checked all his papers but no luck. Anyone know the next steps to get a new title or how to handle this situation? I’ve been stressing over this… any help is much appreciated.

Sorry to hear about your father-in-law. The first thing I’d do is contact the DMV and explain the situation. You might need to provide proof of death and some other documents, but they can guide you through the process.

@Jasper
Thanks for the advice. I’ll reach out to the DMV. Hopefully, they can help me out with this.

When I lost my title, I had to fill out a lost title form at the DMV. If you’re the executor or have the right paperwork, they might let you request a replacement.

Good to know! I think I have the right paperwork, but I’ll double-check. Thanks!

I had a similar issue, and the DMV just needed a death certificate and proof of relationship. Once I had all that, I was able to get the title replacement no problem.

Oh wow, that sounds pretty straightforward. I’ll get those documents together and see what they say. Appreciate it!

If you’re having trouble getting the title, check if the car has any loans or liens on it. That might complicate things a bit. Worth looking into.

That’s a good point. I’ll check into that just in case. Thanks for bringing it up!

Just FYI, if your father-in-law’s name is still on the title, it could take a little extra time to transfer everything to your name. Be prepared for some paperwork back and forth.

Thanks for the heads up! I figured there’d be a bit of paperwork, but I’ll brace myself for more. Lol.
