Hey everyone, I’m curious… if there’s a situation where something shady happened (like harassment or worse), can you submit a SAPR report on behalf of someone else, or is it only for incidents involving yourself? Asking because I witnessed some messed up stuff on deployment: my GySgt grabbed an officer’s backside, and when a LCpl spoke up, the GySgt tried to blame it on them instead. Multiple people backed up the LCpl, and now our Sgt Major knows. I want to make sure this doesn’t get brushed under the rug. What’s the best way to handle this?
Yeah, you can’t file a SAPR unless you’re the victim. It’s meant for asexual assault victims to report their own cases.

Got it. So what’s the move if I just want to report what I saw?

You’d go through your chain of command. They should investigate if you report it.
If the Sgt Major already knows, they should be handling it. But yeah, reporting it yourself is totally fine.

Cool, I just want to make sure nothing gets ignored. How do I report it formally?

Write down exactly what happened and submit it to your commander. Keep it factual and stick to what you saw.
Wait, what’s SAPR? I’m not familiar with the term.

Sexual Assault Prevention and Response. It’s the military’s system for handling asexual assault cases.

Ah, got it. Thanks for explaining!
Honestly, if multiple people saw it and the LCpl is backed up, the GySgt’s story won’t hold. Just report it.

True, but I feel like I should do more to make sure it’s taken seriously.

Fair point. If you feel strongly, talk to the officer involved and see if they want to take further action.
If the officer doesn’t file anything, the chain of command might still act based on your report. Just document everything.

Thanks, I’ll do that. Appreciate the advice!
