I’m in a tough situation and need some advice. The father of my son has threatened to “stop working” if I put him on child support. He’s already paying about $500 a month for another teenage child from a previous relationship. He currently lives in Connecticut.
I’m worried about what will happen if he actually follows through with this threat. Could child support still come after him in some way if he tries to avoid paying? I want to make sure my son gets the support he needs, but I’m not sure how the system works in this kind of situation.
Any insights or advice would be really appreciated. Thanks…
Child support agencies can enforce payments even if he stops working, using legal actions. Document everything and consult a family law attorney to understand your options and ensure support is secured.
If the father of your son tries to avoid paying child support by stopping work, the child support system can still enforce payments. In Connecticut, the court can impute income based on his previous earnings or earning potential if he deliberately stops working. Additionally, the state can pursue enforcement actions such as wage garnishment, seizing tax refunds, or placing a lien on property. It’s important to keep records of all related communications and consider consulting with a family law attorney to ensure that your son receives the support he needs and to navigate any enforcement actions if necessary.
